A: If it is prior to publication of the tnr issue involved, you may ask us for quotes for 20 or more reprint copies. We always write contributors, before publication, offering 3 (minimum) or more issues at discount prices.
Submissions
(Before sending work, please read our complete submission guideline.)
Q: Do you accept unsolicited submissions?
A: About 92% - 95% of our creative literature is unsolicited. However, all fiction and poetry submissions are tied into our Awards Program require a $16.50 (US submissions) entry fee and $18.50 (foreign submissions). Subscribers: $11.50 (US) and $13.50 (foreign).
Q: What kinds of manuscripts are you looking for?
A: We are looking for work that reveals something about the human condition rather than popular fiction or verse, where the purpose is to entertain. All nonfiction prose should be accompanied by a $10.50 reading fee (US submissions) and $13.50 (foreign submissions).
We are looking for personal or objective essays on anything from the visual arts through science and directed to the unspecialized reader.
In our lead article section, we are looking for well-informed and provocative writing on important political or social issues of our day.
Q: Does tnr have specific reading periods?
A: Yes. We read fiction and nonfiction from January 1st through June 30th and from September 1st to October 31st every year. We read poetry only from January 1st through June 30th every year.
Q: Do you have any contests?
A: No. We have an Awards Program, independently judged for the best fiction and poetry in a 3-issue volume. See our guidelines for additional details.
Q: Do I need to include a SASE or IRC?
A: Yes. For the sake of the environment, we ask that SASEs or IRCs be of sufficient size and postage for the return of the manuscript and should be included with the submission.
Q: Should I include a cover letter with submissions?
A: No. We prefer to judge each submission on its own merit rather than on the credentials of authors.
Q: How many manuscripts can I submit at one time; can I include poetry along with prose submissions?
A: If prose pieces are 4 or few pages, you may submit two. Anything over that limit, only one prose manuscript may be submitted. We welcome translations, but ask that the original work always be included.
For poetry submissions, you may submit six 1- to 1 ½-page poems or four 2- to 3-page poems; only one long poem may be submitted. We welcome translations, but ask that the originals always be included.
You may include poetry and prose in a submission but each must have an entry fee ($11.50 for subscribers; $16.50 all others).
Q: Can submit email mss?
A: No.
Q: Can I submit mss simultaneously to other publications?
A: Yes. Although since it can take up to 5 months to get back to a writer, we prefer not.
Q: Can I submit a previously published poem, story, or nonfictional work?
A. Yes, if the publication run 300 copies or fewer, otherwise, no.
Q: If I haven’t heard from you in 5 months should I query about my mss?
A: We suggest waiting 6 full months before making queries about submissions, as we have found that queries often cross in the mail.
Q: If you made positive comment on my story or poems, or other manuscript, can I resubmit it?
A: We suggest that you resubmit work only if we have indicated in a personal letter that we would be glad to see it resubmitted.
Q: I did not receive my entire manuscript back, even though I sent an SASE?
A: There was not sufficient postage to return the entire manuscript, and we indicate on the return letter that we will keep the manuscript for one month or so, you can send in another SASE with sufficient postage.
Q: What do you pay and what rights do you buy?
A: Depending upon the genre and the length of the ms, the pay may varies. For example, a
1 ½-page poem would receive $25 after publication; a 16-page story would receive $50 after publication; and a 20+-page article, ideally, with 2 photographs supplied by author, would receive $150 to $200. We buy all rights, but the writer can market his/her work elsewhere after the work has appeared in tnr. We ask that tnr be credited with first publication in any and all reprints.
